If you are wondering why am I comparing a dual purpose product i.e. Lakme 9 to 5 lip and cheek color with a product that serves only one purpose i.e. Maybelline velvet matte lipstick, here’s a brief: I reviewed Maybelline velvet matte lipstick in shade MAT4 a year ago. Apart from this shade, I also own MAT6 and MAT10. In my opinion, they are the most affordable and long-stay blushes in our Indian makeup market.
What makes Maybelline velvet matte lipstick an amazing blush:
It’s a non-drying liquid lipstick. When you apply it on lips, you’ll find that it doesn’t have a matte finish. But then it’s also not glossy or gloopy. Even why it dries down and loses its sheen after some hours, it doesn’t get patchy.
Take a little quantity and dot it on your cheeks. Pat gently and you will see how effortlessly it blends. Like any other cream blush, it leaves a diffused look. It doesn’t feel sticky at all.
Since the texture translates from being creamy to matte on cheeks, you get a streak-free application plus a blush that stays for long. How awesome is that? Just be quick!
How I discovered it:
I had moved to a different place for a week and forgot to pack my most used blush i.e. Benefit benetint lip and cheek stain. My face looked flat with only foundation on and I wanted a natural flush only. Since I use lipsticks as blush, I thought of trying this one too. I tried this first at the back of my hands and then, applied it on my cheeks. The result was flawless. I was apprehensive about using it as a blush as I was afraid it may cause break-outs on my face. But it didn’t. Since then, I have used it multiple times. No wonder, the best things are discovered by accident!
If you are a woman of color or in search of a long stay blush that doesn’t break your bank and face, you should definitely pay Maybelline counter a visit and try it. You can also layer it below your powder blush in summers to extend their longevity. If you are new to this idea, check out my post on how to use a lipstick as a blush.
Now, here’s a comparison between the two:
FEATURES | LAKME 9 TO 5 LIP AND CHEEK COLOR | MAYBELLINE VELVET
MATTE LIPSTICK |
Price | Rs 575 | Rs 475 |
Quantity | 9 grams | 5ml |
Packaging | Sleek packaging minus the color coding | Attractive packaging with color coding |
No. of shades available | 10 | 8 |
Texture | Light-weight | Buttery but not gooey |
Pigmentation | Extremely pigmented | Not opaque but covers pigmented lips to a good extent |
Finish | Ultra matte | Translates from bring creamy to semi-matte after some hours |
Scented | Yes | No |
Performance as lipstick | Stellar! Stays for 6-7 hours+ | Commendable! The color will wear down after a full meal but since it leaves a tint behind, your lips aren’t left colourless. |
Performance as blush | It doesn’t work for me. Too much of a hassle for a blush. | Knockout! Gives a subtle glow without any harsh lines. Also, stays for longer in winters. |
Best for | Those who are after a long stay lip color and don’t mind the drying texture. | Those who are after a long stay lip color minus the drying part. Also, for those who look forward to use it as a blush easily. |
So, which one will be your pick: Maybelline velvet matte lipstick or Lakme lip and cheek color? I’ll love to know your thoughts on the same.
