Once upon a time, there was a girl who had an elaborate beauty routine and used a minimum of 10 products for her face to get ready. But then job happened to her and everything took a spin. With only 30 minutes to get ready on the whole, she couldn’t afford to spend an eternity on her makeup. The shortage of time led her to discovering signature looks and sticking with them. This meant having a regular love affair with only some beauty products, leaving the other products out of sight. Yes! I am talking about myself!
It’s only two months back I realized that I had been wearing 4-5 signature looks for months with little changes here and there. Given the large makeup collection I possess, I wasn’t finding it funny how quickly I was getting bored of my everyday beauty routine. In college days, I had the freedom to experiment a lot and wear different kinds of looks but with job, the case is different. Luckily I work at a place where there are little-no restrictions (awesome bosses too!). However I still like to set some lines when it comes to super glittery eyeliners, bright lipsticks or contoured face. Also, I hardly wear blush to office. That’s me. I don’t like to wear a lot of makeup to my office. So how did I make an escape from my makeup rut?
Here’s how:
1) Changing the finish of eyeliner
– I am addicted to Maybelline hyper glossy liquid eyeliner(Review HERE). It’s a boon for my super oily eyelids. Given its recent price hike, I really hope it’s price tag never crosses INR300. The eyeliner has a glossy finish. So now I alternate it with eyeliners that have a matte finish. The finish alone lends me a new look. No kidding! On days when I am bored of both, I reach out for Sephora Glitter Black pencil (Review HERE) which has minute silver glitter over it.
2) Changing the lower lash line game
– To start with, I hardly wear kajal. Even when I do, it’s only on the outer edges of my lower lash line. If you are someone who wears a lot of Black kajal, skip the shade and instead go for subtle colors. Office goers like me can wear dark brown, gold, silver, copper and bronze. Brown on lower lash line can enhance the visibility of dark circles, so ensure to cover them properly. Since I have small eyes, I apply these subtle shades on the outside of my lower lash line and nude eyeliner instead on my lower lash line (shown HERE). You can do the same for your upper lash line too.
3) Going for subtle bright lipsticks
– Because when I am bored of wearing tinted lip balms or light lipstick shades, I turn to subtle bright lipstick shades. I can think of colorbar velvet matte lipstick Fairytale, Elle18 coral romance, Maybelline lip polish Glam 02, etc. I have this post on ‘everyday bright lipsticks’ which you can check out. Some days, I just wear my favourite bright lipstick by blotting it as a stain twice on my lips.
4) Skipping a major part
– I am an eyeliner girl! Totally! I can afford to miss lipstick but I can’t afford to wear eyeliner. The prime reason behind that being, I have small eyes and after wearing glasses, they appear even smaller. So on days when my makeup boredom meter strikes high, I skip it all together. But then I wear lens on those days.. ehehe! 😛 I step out with a subtle bright lipstick and I like it. B-) If for you it’s your bright lipstick, exchange the look with a subdued version. You will be in a for a pleasant surprise. However I am not talking about skipping on things which I just can’t afford to bargain like filling in my eyebrows or compact. I need them every day!
5) Change your eyeliner style
– My another addiction is winged eyeliner. And then one day I went on to break the monotony. I just drew a simple, neat line. Tada! So experiment with different eyeliner styles. If you fill your lower lash line completely, stop doing that at the middle. Go for smudged eyeliner look which hardly takes two minutes. I have done a tutorial on how to do smokey eyes using just an eyeliner. You can check that out HERE. I also like thin flick look.
Apart from these tips, here are some more in general:
– Go for coloured mascaras instead of Black and Brown. I have one from Sephora in a navy blue shade and it’s beautiful!
– Start wearing brown lipsticks. You can begin with peachy brown shades such as Streetwear ultra color lipstick ‘crisp caramel’. Revlon super lustrous lipstick ‘Fleshtone’ is a pretty warm brown shade. Maybelline lip polish ‘Glam 14’ is a *ude brown shade which looks lovely on fair-medium skin tones.
– If you are too bored or think you can’t find something new in your vanity, just visit a makeup counter. Try random products! You might just fall into love with a new product!
– Browse internet for inspiration. Nothing works better! I have some 5-6 signature looks inspired by the internet which work like a charm when I am in a hurry.
Just remember that with new changes, you will take a little time to adjust. The instant reaction is usually ‘ugh’! Don’t let that demotivate you. Wear your new look at least 3-4 times before you finally make a conclusion.
Now your turn! List down your tips! Or did you realize just now that you too are caught in a makeup rut?
